What is expanded form?
Expanded form writes a number as the sum of what each digit is worth. 3,482 becomes 3,000 + 400 + 80 + 2. It's how kids prove they know what each digit really means.
- Each digit becomes its value. The 3 in 3,482 means 3,000.
- Zeros hold a place but drop out of the sum: 4,072 = 4,000 + 70 + 2.
- Add the parts to get back to the number: 3,000 + 400 + 80 + 2 = 3,482
Why schools teach it
It's the first step of every split-the-number method
Knowing that the 4 in 3,482 is "in the hundreds place" is half the idea. Expanded form makes kids write its value, 400. That's the step that trips kids up later in multi-digit math.
Almost every method on this site starts here. The area model splits 23 into 20 + 3. Partial sums adds 300 + 400 before 20 + 50. Partial quotients takes away 100 groups first. Each one is expanded form doing the work.

What to say, and what to skip
Say this
What is the 4 really worth?
Ask for the value, not just the place.Read it out loud: three thousand, four hundred eighty-two.
The words match the parts. What happened to the zero?
In 4,072 the zero holds the hundreds place but adds nothing. Can you check it by adding the parts back up?
Skip this
- Accepting 3 + 4 + 8 + 2.Writing the digits instead of their values is the most common mistake. Ask what each digit is worth.
Expanded form is just busywork.
It's the foundation for the area model, partial sums and partial products.- Insisting on + 0 for zero digits. Most classes leave it out. Follow what the teacher accepts.

What's the difference between expanded form and expanded notation?
Many schools use expanded notation for the next step: writing each part as a multiplication, like 3 × 1,000 + 4 × 100 + 8 × 10 + 2 × 1. It's the same idea, usually in grades 4 and 5.
Do we write the zero?
Usually not. 4,072 is written 4,000 + 70 + 2. Some teachers accept + 0, so follow the class.
Does it work with decimals?
Yes, from 4th or 5th grade: 3.25 = 3 + 0.2 + 0.05.
Can the parts be in any order?
The sum is the same in any order, and some worksheets mix the order on purpose to check understanding. Most classes write the biggest part first.
