How do kids graph parabolas now?
Kids graph y = ax² + bx + c in a fixed order. Find the axis of symmetry with x = −b ÷ 2a, plug that x in to get the vertex, then make a small table with points on each side. Because a parabola is symmetric, every point on one side has a mirror twin on the other.
- Axis of symmetry: the line x = −b ÷ 2a.
- Vertex: the turning point, on the axis.
- Mirror points: plot one side, copy it across the axis.
Why schools teach it
Key features before plotting
Algebra 1 students graph quadratics and point out key features: the vertex, the axis, the intercepts, and whether it opens up or down (HSF.IF.C.7a and B.4).
Starting with the axis means the table is centered in the right place, so kids don't waste points on the flat-looking tails. The mirror trick halves the arithmetic.

What to say, and what to skip
Say this
What's −b ÷ 2a?
That's the axis.Plug that x in. What's y?
That's the vertex.Does it open up or down? How can you tell from a?
Which points are mirror twins?
Skip this
- Making a table from x = −5 to 5 every time.Center the table on the vertex.
- Connecting points with straight lines.It's a smooth U shape.
- Forgetting the negative in −b.For y = x² − 4x + 1, −b ÷ 2a = 4 ÷ 2 = 2.
See it in action
Graphing y = x² + 2x − 3
Axis
x = −2 ÷ 2 = −1Vertex: plug in −1
1 − 2 − 3 = −4, so (−1, −4)Points on one side
x = 0 → −3; x = 1 → 0Mirror them across x = −1
(−2, −3) and (−3, 0)
a = 1 is positive, so it opens up and the vertex is the lowest point.

Parents also ask
Why x = −b ÷ 2a?
It's halfway between the two x-intercepts. It comes from the quadratic formula: the ± part splits evenly around −b ÷ 2a.
How do you know if it opens up or down?
If a is positive it opens up; if a is negative it opens down.
What's the y-intercept?
Just c, the constant. Plug in x = 0.
Do kids use graphing calculators?
Often to check, sometimes on tests. They still need the vertex and axis by hand.
