What are point-slope and standard form?

Point-slope form, y − y₁ = m(x − x₁), writes a line straight from one point and the slope: just fill in the blanks. Standard form, Ax + By = C, keeps x and y on the same side with whole numbers. All three forms (with y = mx + b) describe the same line; kids move between them with the same algebra moves they already know.

Why schools teach it

Fewer steps when you have a point

Algebra 1 students write linear equations from a description, a graph or two points (HSA.CED.A.2 and HSF.LE.A.2). With a point and a slope, point-slope form skips the solve-for-b step entirely.

Standard form shows up in word problems with two quantities, like 2x + 3y = 24 for 2-dollar and 3-dollar tickets, and it makes the intercepts easy to find: cover up x to get y, and cover up y to get x.

What to say, and what to skip

Say this

  • What's the point, and what's the slope? Those are the only blanks.
  • What's the sign inside the parentheses?y − y₁: subtracting a negative turns into plus.
  • To get y = mx + b, what comes first?Distribute, then add y₁ to both sides.
  • In standard form, is A positive and are there no fractions?

Skip this

  • Mixing up x₁ and y₁.y₁ goes with y, x₁ goes with x.
  • Sign slips with negatives.Through (−2, 5): y − 5 = m(x + 2).
  • Leaving fractions in standard form.Multiply every term by the denominator.

See it in action

Writing the line through (−2, 5) with slope 3

  1. Fill in point-slope form

    y − 5 = 3(x + 2)
  2. Distribute and add 5 for slope-intercept

    y = 3x + 11
  3. Move the x term for standard form

    3x − y = −11

Check with the point: 3(−2) − 5 = −11 ✓.

Parents also ask

Which form is best?

Whichever the problem gives you: point-slope with a point and a slope, slope-intercept to graph, standard form for intercepts and word problems.

Is point-slope the same as the slope formula?

They're cousins. Point-slope is the slope formula, (y − y₁)/(x − x₁) = m, with both sides multiplied by (x − x₁).

Can the answer to a point-slope problem look different?

Yes. Any point on the line works, so y − 5 = 3(x + 2) and y − 8 = 3(x + 1) are both right.

Why does A have to be positive in standard form?

It's a convention so everyone's answer matches. Multiply everything by −1 if A comes out negative.
