What are CVC words?

CVC stands for consonant, vowel, consonant: three-letter words like cat, sit and hop, with a short vowel in the middle. They're usually the first words kids sound out on their own.

  • Consonants on the outside: c and t.
  • A short vowel in the middle: a as in apple.
  • Change the vowel, get a new word: cat, cot, cut
Three letters, three sounds, one short vowel.

Why schools teach it

Every letter does what it's supposed to

In a CVC word, each letter makes its most common sound, so a kindergartner who knows the letter sounds can read it without memorizing (RF.K.3b). That first success matters a lot.

The middle vowel is the hardest part. Short vowels sound alike, especially e and i, so teachers spend a lot of time on them. Most early reading books are full of CVC words for this reason.

What to say, and what to skip

Say this

  • Tap a finger for each sound, then blend.
  • What's the middle sound?Vowels are where most mix-ups happen.
  • Change one letter. What word is it now?cat to hat to hot
  • Is that a real word or a silly word?Silly words like zat are good practice too.

Skip this

  • Teaching the words by sight. The point is sounding them out, even when they're easy.
  • Using words with x, like fox or six, as first words.X makes two sounds, /ks/, so those words break the pattern.
  • The a in cat says its name.In CVC words, vowels are short. Long vowels come later, with silent e.

See it in action

Reading “pig” sound by sound

  1. Point to p and say its sound

    /p/
  2. Point to the vowel: short i, as in itch

    /i/
  3. Add /g/ and blend

    /p/ /i/ /g/ → pig

Kids often get the first and last sounds right and the vowel wrong. That middle sound is where practice pays off.

Parents also ask

What are the short vowel sounds?

a as in apple, e as in egg, i as in itch, o as in octopus, u as in up.

My child mixes up e and i.

Very common. Have them watch your mouth: e opens wider. Practice pairs like pen and pin.

Are silly words useful?

Yes. Reading a made-up word like mep proves your child is sounding out, not remembering.

What comes after CVC words?

Words with digraphs like ship and chin, then blends like frog and jump.
