What is a fluency check?
A fluency check is a one-minute read of a short passage. The teacher counts the words read correctly, called words correct per minute (WCPM). Repeated reading, reading the same passage three or four times, is how kids build speed and smoothness.
- Read for one minute from the start of the passage.
- Count the words read correctly. The numbers at the end of each line help.
- words read − mistakes = WCPM
Why schools teach it
Smooth reading frees the brain for meaning
A child who sounds out every word has little attention left for understanding. Fluency standards ask kids to read grade-level text accurately, at a good pace and with expression (RF.1.4, RF.2.4, RF.3.4). Schools check it with short timed reads a few times a year.
The number is a quick check, not a race. Rereading the same passage builds speed better than rushing through new ones, and expression matters as much as speed.

What to say, and what to skip
Say this
Read it like you're telling a story.
Expression counts.Let's read it again and see if it's smoother.
You read more words this time!
Compare to their own last try.Point to the word that was tricky.
Then practice that one.
Skip this
Faster! Go faster!
Rushing creates mistakes and flat reading.- Comparing to other kids' numbers.Compare to their own last read.
- Timing every read.Time the first and last tries. In between, just read.
See it in action
A three-try repeated reading
Try 1: read for one minute and count
42 words, 3 mistakes = 39Try 2: read again, no timer, fix tricky words
Try 3: time it again and compare
51 words, 1 mistake = 50
Gains on a reread are expected; that's how practice works. New passages show longer-term growth.

Parents also ask
What WCPM is good for my child's grade?
Schools use published norms that change by grade and time of year. Ask the teacher what your child's goal is.
What counts as a mistake?
Skipped words, wrong words, and words you had to tell them. Self-corrections usually count as correct.
Should we use a timer every night?
No. Reread for smoothness most nights and time it once in a while.
My child reads fast but doesn't understand.
Slow down and talk about the passage. Speed only helps if understanding comes with it.
