What is silent e?

When a word ends in vowel, consonant, e, the e is silent and the vowel says its name: cap becomes cape, and kit becomes kite. Classes often call it “magic e” or “bossy e.”

Grade 1Common Core RF.1.3cAlso called: magic e, bossy e, VCe60-second read
capshort acapea says its name
  • Without e: a short vowel, as in cap.
  • With e: the a says its name, as in cape.
  • kit → kite, hop → hope, cub → cube
The e makes no sound, but it changes the vowel.

Why schools teach it

The first big pattern for long vowels

First graders learn the final e pattern for long vowel sounds (RF.1.3c). It's often the first time kids see one letter change another letter's sound, which is a big idea for reading longer words.

Teachers use word pairs like cap and cape so kids see and hear exactly what the e does. The pattern is called VCe: vowel, consonant, e.

What to say, and what to skip

Say this

  • Is there an e at the end? What does it do to the vowel?
  • Read it without the e, then with it.cap, cape
  • Does the vowel say its sound or its name?
  • Can you add an e to make a new word?pin → pine, not → note

Skip this

  • The e doesn't do anything. It's silent, but it has a job. Saying so helps kids look for it.
  • Treating every final e the same.Words like have and give break the pattern. Those are heart words.
  • When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking. That rhyme is wrong almost as often as it's right, and it doesn't explain silent e.

See it in action

Reading “hope”

  1. Spot the e at the end

    hope
  2. Jump back to the vowel: it says its name

    o says /ō/
  3. Blend, skipping the e

    /h/ /ō/ /p/ → hope

Kids often read hope as hop at first. Asking “is there an e?” is the most useful prompt.

Parents also ask

What does “say its name” mean?

The vowel sounds like its letter name: a in cake, i in kite, o in hope, u in cute.

Why do some teachers call it bossy e?

It's a way to remember that the e changes the vowel. Use whichever name the class uses.

What about words like give and have?

They break the pattern. English words rarely end in v, so an e was added. Teach them as heart words.

Does silent e work with e, as in Pete?

Yes, but there are very few e-consonant-e words, so classes focus on a, i, o and u.
