What are sound boxes?

Sound boxes are a row of squares, one for each sound in a word. Kids push a chip or write letters into a box as they say each sound. Ship gets three boxes, not four, because sh is one sound.

Grades K–2Common Core RF.K.2d · RF.1.2dAlso called: Elkonin boxes60-second read
shipship3 sounds, so 3 boxes
  • One box per sound, not per letter.
  • Letter teams share a box: sh, ch, ck, ee.
  • ship = sh + i + p: three sounds.
Counting sounds, not letters, is the point.

Why schools teach it

It turns sounds you can't see into something you can touch

The boxes are named after the Russian psychologist D. B. Elkonin. Each sound gets its own spot on the page, so kids can feel how many sounds a word has. Kindergartners say each sound in short words (RF.K.2d), and first graders break longer words into all their sounds (RF.1.2d).

Later, letters go in the boxes. That shows kids why sh takes one box and why spelling isn't always one letter per sound.

What to say, and what to skip

Say this

  • Say the word slowly. Push a chip up for each sound.
  • How many sounds did you hear?
  • Which box has the /i/ sound?Finding the middle sound is hard and great practice.
  • Do these two letters make one sound or two?For teams like sh and ck.

Skip this

  • Counting letters instead of sounds.Duck has four letters but three sounds: d, u, ck.
  • Saying letter names into the boxes.Use sounds: /d/ /u/ /k/, not “dee, you, see, kay.”
  • Moving the chips for them.Your child moving each chip while saying the sound is the whole exercise.

See it in action

Spelling “duck” with sound boxes

  1. Say it slowly and count the sounds

    /d/ /u/ /k/: 3 boxes
  2. Push a chip into a box for each sound

  3. Swap the chips for letters

    d | u | ck

The /k/ at the end of a short word is usually spelled ck. Both letters go in one box.

Parents also ask

What can we use as chips?

Coins, dry beans, building bricks or small crackers all work.

Do we need letters at all?

Not at first. Start with chips, then add letters once your child knows the sounds.

How many boxes for a silent e word, like cake?

Programs differ. Many use three boxes and write a_e in the middle box to show the a and e work as a team. Ask what your child's class does.

My child hears four sounds in ship.

Say /sh/ slowly together. It's one sound made by two letters, and that idea takes time.
