Why do teachers say quiz yourself instead of reread?
Retrieval practice means pulling information out of memory, by quizzing yourself, instead of putting it in again by rereading. Flashcards are the classic tool. The Leitner box makes them smarter: cards you know move to boxes you review less often, and cards you miss go back to the start.
- Box 1: new or missed cards, every day.
- Know it? The card moves to the next box.
- Miss it? Back to box 1.
Why schools teach it
Remembering is what makes memories stronger
Learning research finds that practice testing is one of the most effective ways to study, much better than rereading or highlighting. Each time a student pulls an answer from memory, it gets easier to find next time. Researchers call this the testing effect.
Rereading feels productive because the words look familiar, but familiar isn't the same as remembered. Flashcards show kids honestly what they know.

- Rereading notes as “studying.”It feels good but works far less well than quizzing.
- Flipping the card before answering.Say or write the answer first.
- Dropping cards once they're right once.Keep reviewing, just less often.
