What is a PEEL paragraph?
PEEL is a formula for a body paragraph that makes an argument. Point: state the paragraph's main idea. Evidence: give a fact, quote or example. Explain: say how the evidence proves the point. Link: tie it back to the question or the essay's thesis.
- Point, Evidence, Explain: the core of any proven idea.
- Link: connects back to the big question.
- Some classes say PEAL: Point, Evidence, Analysis, Link.
Why schools teach it
Middle school paragraphs have to argue, not just tell
In grades 6–8, kids support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence (W.6.1b, W.7.1b). PEEL makes sure every paragraph has a point, proof for it, and the thinking that connects them.
The Link step keeps long essays on track: each paragraph ends by showing how it answers the question.

Answering “How are penguins built for cold water?”
Point and Evidence
Penguins have a built-in layer of warmth. The text says, “a thick layer of fat keeps them warm.”Explain
The fat works like a winter coat under their skin, holding in body heat.Link
This is one way a penguin's body is made for life in icy water.
In a longer essay, each body paragraph is one PEEL.

What's the difference between PEEL and RACE?
They're close. RACE answers a question; PEEL builds a paragraph inside a longer piece. Link ties it to the thesis.
What does PEAL mean?
Point, Evidence, Analysis, Link. Analysis is the same as Explain.
How long is a PEEL paragraph?
Five to eight sentences, with one or two pieces of evidence.
Can the evidence be from my child's own life?
For opinion pieces, sometimes. For text-based questions, it should come from the text.
