How do kids plan a big project?

A big project feels impossible as one task and easy as six small ones. Teachers teach kids to break a project into steps (chunking), decide how long each step takes, then start at the due date and count backward to find when each step must be done.

  • Plan backward: start from the due date.
  • Due date comes first in the planning, last on the calendar.
Start from the end.

Why schools teach it

Projects fail at the start, not the end

Kids often underestimate how long things take and start the night before. Breaking a project into steps makes the first step obvious, and backward planning shows the real start date, which is usually much earlier than kids expect.

It's the same skill adults use for work deadlines. Many teachers hand out a project calendar; this method teaches kids to make their own.

What to say, and what to skip

Say this

  • What are all the steps?Chunk
  • How many days will each one take?
  • It's due on the 20th. When must the poster be done?Count back
  • What's the first step, and when will you start?

Skip this

  • “Just start working on it.”Without steps, kids don't know where to begin.
  • Planning only the due date.Every step needs a finish-by date.
  • No buffer.Leave a day or two for surprises.

Planning a poster due October 20

  1. Chunk

    Pick topic (1 day) · Research (4) · Write text (5) · Make poster (4) · Final check (1)
  2. Count back from Oct 20

Poster done Oct 19 · text done Oct 15 · research done Oct 10 · topic done Oct 6
  3. Write it in the planner

Each step's finish-by date goes on the calendar

Counting every calendar day, weekends included, gives a simple plan. Some families skip weekends.
