What are 3-2-1 and GIST summaries?
These are short ways to sum up a reading or lesson. In a 3-2-1, kids write 3 facts they learned, 2 new words or interesting ideas, and 1 question they still have. A GIST is a one-sentence summary of 20 words or fewer, which forces them to pick only the most important ideas.
- 3-2-1: facts, words, and a question.
- GIST: one sentence, 20 words or fewer.
- Both often appear as an exit ticket at the end of class.
Why schools teach it
Summing up is how learning sticks
Students determine the main idea of a text and summarize it (RI.4.2, RI.6.2). Asking kids to pull out the most important points right after reading helps them remember, and shows the teacher what they understood.
The 20-word limit in a GIST is the point: it makes kids choose what matters most instead of retelling everything. Our writing guide to summaries covers longer summaries.

- Copying the first sentences of the text.A summary covers the whole section.
- Letting the question be “none.”There's always something to wonder.
- Counting words strictly at first.Getting close to 20 is fine while learning.
