What is the SQ3R reading method?
SQ3R is a five-step way to read a textbook section. Survey it first by skimming the headings and pictures. Turn each heading into a Question. Read to find the answers. Recite the answers out loud or in writing. Review it all later. The three R's give it its name.
- Survey and Question before reading.
- Read with a purpose: to answer the questions.
- Recite and Review after, so it sticks.
Why schools teach it
Textbooks aren't read like stories
Students are expected to understand how informational texts are organized (RI.6.5) and to use details to answer questions (RI.5.1). Reading a dense chapter straight through often leaves kids with nothing. SQ3R gives them a reason to read each part.
It's one of the oldest study methods, created by Francis Robinson in 1946, and it still matches what learning research recommends: preview, ask questions and test yourself.
