How does the five-paragraph essay work?
The five-paragraph essay has an introduction that ends with a thesis (the main point and three reasons), three body paragraphs (one for each reason), and a conclusion that restates the thesis and wraps up. It's the hamburger paragraph grown into a whole essay.
- Introduction: hook, background, then the thesis.
- Body paragraphs: one reason each, with evidence and explanation.
- Conclusion: the thesis in new words and a final thought.
Why schools teach it
It teaches organization for longer writing
Upper elementary and middle school kids are asked to write informative and argument pieces that group related ideas and end with a conclusion (W.5.2, W.6.1, W.6.2). The five-paragraph form gives them a dependable structure.
The plan matters more than the writing. Once the thesis and three reasons are set, each body paragraph is just a hamburger or PEEL paragraph.
