What is OREO opinion writing?
OREO is a cookie-shaped formula for opinion writing. Opinion: state what you think. Reason: tell why. Example: give proof or a story. Opinion: say what you think again in new words. Like the cookie, the opinion goes on both sides of the filling.
- O and O: the opinion starts and ends it.
- R and E: the filling: a reason and an example.
- Longer pieces repeat R and E for each reason.
Why schools teach it
Opinion writing starts in the early grades
From third grade, kids write opinion pieces that state an opinion, give reasons, and end with a concluding statement (W.3.1, W.4.1). OREO puts those parts in order with a picture every kid remembers.
The Example step matters most. It turns “I just like it” into proof that would convince a reader.
