What is a thesis statement?
A thesis statement is the one sentence, usually at the end of the introduction, that tells the reader the essay's main point. Many schools teach the “three-prong” thesis: the main point plus three reasons, which become the three body paragraphs.
- The main point comes first.
- Three reasons follow, in the order the body paragraphs will go.
- A thesis is an arguable point, not just a fact.
Why schools teach it
It keeps the whole essay on track
Kids are asked to state an opinion or claim clearly and organize reasons to support it (W.5.1a, W.6.1a), and to introduce a topic with a clear focus (W.7.2a). The thesis does both in one sentence.
The three-prong version is a scaffold. It tells kids exactly what each body paragraph will be about, so the essay almost plans itself.

- “In this essay I will tell you about...”Most teachers mark down announcing. State the point.
- A thesis that's just a fact.“Dogs are mammals” can't be argued.
- A question as the thesis.A question can be the hook. The thesis answers it.

Schools should start later because teens need more sleep, rested students learn better, and sleep protects their health.
Older students often drop the list and write a more focused thesis. The idea stays the same.

Parents also ask
Where does the thesis go?
Usually at the end of the introduction, right before the first body paragraph.
Does it have to list three reasons?
Not always. It's the most common way taught in grades 4–6. Older students may write a single focused claim.
Is a thesis the same as a topic sentence?
A thesis is the main point of the whole essay. A topic sentence is the main point of one paragraph.
What makes a thesis weak?
It's a fact, it announces (“I will tell you...”), it's too broad, or the reasons overlap.
